Norgestrel is a synthetic progestin and a racemic mixture of dextronorgestrel and levonorgestrel (Cay-10006318), of which levonorgestrel is the biologically active component. In vivo, norgestrel administered via intrauterine device (IUD) prevents pregnancy in rats.
