Hygromycin A is an antibiotic originally isolated from S. hygroscopicus. It is active against numerous spirochete bacteria, including T. pallidum, L. biflexa, and four strains of B. burgdorferi (MICs = 0.03-4 µg/ml for all). Hygromycin A binds to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC) in the 70S ribosomal subunit to inhibit protein synthesis. It completely eliminates bacterial infection in skin biopsies from B. burgdorferi-infected mice in a model of acute Lyme disease when administered at doses ranging from 50 to 250 mg/kg twice per day.Formal Name: 5-deoxy-5-[[(2E)-3-[4-[(6-deoxy-beta-D-arabino-hexofuranos-5-ulos-1-yl)oxy]-3-hydroxyphenyl]-2-methyl-1-oxo-2-propen-1-yl]amino]-1,2-O-methylene-D-neo-inositol.
