Fenofibric Acid

Fenofibric acid is an agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha), PPARgamma, and PPARdelta (EC50s = 22.4, 1.47, and 1.06 µM, respectively, in a transactivation assay) and an active metabolite of the PPARalpha agonist fenofibrate (Cay-10005368). It is formed by the hydrolysis of fenofibrate in tissue. It inhibits COX-2 activity in a cell-free assay (IC50 = 0.048 µM). Fenofibric acid (500 µM) reduces aldehyde oxidase 1 (AOX1) protein levels in HepG2 cells. Fenofibric acid (10 mg/kg) reduces carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats.
