Bisacodyl

Bisacodyl is a prodrug form of the stimulant laxative desacetyl bisacodyl (Cay-20928). It reduces the activity of Na+/K+-ATPases in isolated rat colon following administration in the drinking water at a concentration of 83 µM. Bisacodyl (20 mg/kg) decreases colonic aquaporin-3 levels and increases stool water content in rats, effects that are reversed by the COX inhibitor indomethacin (Cay-70270).
