5-Bromo-3-indolyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside (Bluo-Gal) is a cell-permeable chromogenic substrate for beta-galactosidase. Upon enzymatic hydrolysis, it generates an indigo-colored precipitate that can be used to measure beta-galactosidase activity.
