Selective antibiotic for the Sh ble gene, This unique antibiotic shows high toxicity in mammalian cells, plants, yeasts and bacteria. Ocin acts by binding to DNA and cleaving it causing cell death. Ocin is a copper-chelated glycopeptide antibiotic isolated from culture broth of a Streptomyces verticullus mutant and is part of the structurally related group of Bleomycin/Phleomycin type antibiotics. The product of Sh ble, (Streptoalloteichus hindustanus bleomycin-resistance) gene confers resistance to Zeocin and Zeocell. The 14kD protein stoichiometrically binds to Zeocin and inhibits DNA strand cleavage and subsequent cell death. Produced by a Streptomyces verticullus mutant and is part of the structurally related group of Bleomycin/Phleomycin type antibiotics. Used as a selective agent for the incorporation of the Sh ble gene which encodes a 13,665 Dalton protein. The protein binds to the antibiotic and prevents binding to DNA.
