Is a biologically active shingolipid metabolite generated by enzymatic cleavage of stores of sphingomyelin in membraines of stimulated cells. It induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) which is associated with enhanced expression of bax protein. Regulation of bax gene expression by shingosine-1-phosphate is independent of the p53 tumor suppressor.
